The VOHSAC Method of Achieving

Do you want a highly effective method for achieving? Try VOHSAC.

What’s VOHSAC, you say? Well, we are living in an acronym era - from YOLO to FOMO (or, since the pandemic, the much loved JOMO - joy of missing out).

Personally, I love an acronym if it helps me remember something.

So, one I’ve been pondering and putting together is VOHSAC. It’s a method or framework for achieving that I discovered most highly effective leaders do without particularly realising it.

What does VOHSAC mean? Here goes:

V is for Vision.

When you are thinking about achieving something, it’s super effective to ‘begin with the end in mind’ (Stephen Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) and create a vision. Envisioning what success looks like gives you a clearer direction of what you are aiming for. So ask yourself, ‘What’s the vision?’

O is for Obstacles.

Any vision is likely to have a few obstacles between you and the endpoint. Think of it as something that is blocking the beautiful view. Stopping to think of what the blockers are and how much of an obstacle they are can help you prepare to get around them or go through them.

H is for Help.

When you are trying to get from A to B from here to your vision, you are likely to need help. Help because you don’t know the direct way or how to tackle an obstacle or because you need some wisdom. This is not a weakness, you cannot possibly know everything about everything. I think getting help, advice, guidance, and support fast tracks you to your vision. So, identify the help you need and get it.

S is for Strategy.

Once you have your vision, have spotted the obstacles and got help on how to get around them or through them, then you have all you need to set your strategy. This is your game plan, your route, your plan of action all laid out including any plan Bs for pivots or unexpected turns of events. This takes us on to the next step…

A is for Action

Now it’s time to take action! Put one foot in front of the other, follow that strategy, and get around or through those obstacles to achieve that vision. Remember, the Chinese proverb ‘a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step’.

Finally…

C is for Celebration

Once you achieve your vision, remember to celebrate it and look back at how far you have come, the obstacles you’ve overcome, and the wisdom you have gained on the way. This is such a crucial part because I see so many people achieve great things and then chuck them over their shoulders never to be appreciated again.

Okay, so there you go: The VOHSAC Method for Achieving.

What do you think? Helpful? I hope so.

Try it out and let me know if it works for you.
