It’s the Grit in the Oyster
I love the power of a reframe, and for some reason, the saying "It's the grit in the oyster" is reverberating around my mind.
Maybe because recently we went to the seaside and oysters were on the menu?
The full saying is:
"It's the Grit in the Oyster that makes the Pearl."
When a tiny bit of grit or sand gets inside the oyster's shell, it slowly secretes layers of aragonite and conchiolin to reduce irritation.
This creates a material called nacre, aka mother of pearl, which encases the grit to protect the oyster.
Over time, a pearl is formed!
That made me reflect...
What irritants or grit I’ve had in my oyster, and what pearls they’d turned into?
What immediately comes to mind is being made redundant.
That was a bit GRITTY!
But without that, I would never have this pearl of a purpose-driven career now!
Other things: Being told one of my film wasn’t that special!
That feedback was a gritty moment. But it meant I learned and was determined to make my next film blooming amazing.
Whether we want it or not, a bit of grit in our oyster doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
It can morph into something beautiful.
But like the oyster, you have to tend to that grit, whether that's
Self-Compassion
Reflection
Development
Or time - just waiting until the wisdom reveals itself
So tell me, what’s the grit in your oyster, and what aragonite or conchiolin / secret sauce do you use to turn it into a pearl?
