How to Stay Relevant When Everything's Changing
Let's be honest - keeping up with the pace of change right now feels a bit like trying to drink from a fire hose while riding a unicycle!
If you are prone to
over-achievement
perfectionism
are driven
ambitious
Yes, I’m looking at you!
You may be frantically trying to learn Python, master ChatGPT, understand blockchain, and keep up with the latest trends - all while doing your actual job and possibly managing your home, family, and more.
No wonder then you are feeling knackered, overwhelmed, and ironically, feeling less effective at everything.
I’m here to set you free with this liberating truth:
You don't need to be the smartest person in the room to be the most valuable.
And Relevance Isn't About Knowing Everything (Thank Goodness)
It's about staying CURIOUS, ADAPTABLE and VISIBLE.
Let me break it down for you....
I’m not going to say it’s easy because if it were, we’d all be doing it already. But here goes:
1. Curious beats Clever every time
The person asking thoughtful questions in meetings? That's who gets remembered. The one who says "I don't know, but I'll find out" instead of bluffing. That's who gets trusted with bigger challenges. Curiosity is your competitive advantage because it never goes out of date.
Try this: Next time you're in a meeting, ask one genuine question about something you don't understand. Watch how it shifts the conversation - and how people perceive you.
2. Adaptable trumps Perfect
Forget being the expert who has all the answers. Be the person who can roll with whatever comes next. The colleague who says, "Right, this is new - let's figure it out together", instead of "That's not how we've always done it."
Try this: When faced with a new process or tool, resist the urge to master it completely before engaging. Jump in, learn as you go, and let people see you adapting in real-time.
3. Visible matters more than you think
Brilliant work done in silence is just... silent. Share your learning journey. Post about what you're discovering. Admit when you're figuring things out. People want to work with humans, not robots who pretend to know everything.
Try this: This week, share one thing you're learning about - even if you're not an expert yet. Your vulnerability will be refreshing and memorable.
The people who stay relevant aren't the ones cramming every new skill into their heads. They're the ones who combine their existing expertise with genuine curiosity, authentic adaptability, and the courage to be visible whilst they're learning.
Your experience matters. Your perspective is valuable. And your willingness to keep growing? That's what makes you indispensable.
What's your favourite way to stay current?
I'd love to hear your strategies.
Take care
