Confidence Isn’t Magic – It’s a Muscle

Remember that advert: "Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline"

That's what I want to talk about today...

Confidence and the belief that it is something you are born with.

I don't think so.

I was not.

I was a very shy, awkward young lady, and confidence is something I definitely built.

So I do think confidence isn’t necessarily something you’re born with—it’s something you can build like a muscle.

And like a muscle, it gets stronger the more you use it.  Most people think confidence is something you either you have or your don't.

Not true. Confidence is built, not bestowed.

And the way you build it? ACTION

Think about how your muscles grow - you don't wait until you feel strong before you pick up a weight. You pick up the weight, and the strength follows.

Here are three ways to start building your confidence muscle

1. Start Small

For example, speak up in one meeting this week. Just once.

Don't wait around thinking, thinking of questions and, and then getting, getting annoyed because somebody else got in there first and you know, that was your question all along. Just practise speaking up in meetings.

2. Stack your Wins

Write down every small success.  Evidence fuels confidence.

I'm a big fan of the notes section in my iPhone. Having a little note, it's like a cheer list. So write down every small success.

Why? It's harder to dismiss something if it's in black and white.

3. Move before you are ready

Move. Take action before you feel 100% ready.

If you're waiting for confidence before you act, then flip it, act first. And the confidence will follow.

Stop waiting for the feeling. Start building the skill.

So tell me, what one small action will you take this week to strengthen your confidence muscle?

Hit reply and let me know, I'd love to cheer you on.

Take care
