10 Rejections in One Day. Here's What Nobody Tells You.
“I had 10 rejections in a day, realised I’d been working for 6 years without a break and I had to Google how to do an Out of Office message.”
One of my friends said this to me recently and honestly… I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
Because the thing is - these days, the problem might very well not be you.
You may be irrefutably talented, experienced, hardworking BUT the market has changed.
· People are buying differently
· Budgets are tighter
· Industries are contracting
· Decision-making is slower
And what used to work simply doesn’t work in the same way anymore.
That doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it means you need a new strategy.
I see so many brilliant people exhausting themselves trying to force the old model to work:
· More applications
· More pitching
· More networking
· More proving
Meanwhile they’re running on fumes and taking every rejection as evidence that they’re the problem.
But career confidence now isn’t about endlessly banging on locked doors, it’s about adaptability. It’s about taking your passion, your expertise and your value… and applying it to problems people will pay to solve right now.
The people thriving right now are not always the “best”. They are often the people most willing to pivot, reposition, rethink and repackage what they do.
That’s not giving up on your purpose. It’s about thinking of the best way to realise that purpose now.
Which involves evolving, looking at the big picture, taking time to understand audience behaviour, consumer desire (and don’t forget, we ARE the audience and consumer - so self-awareness and honesty about our needs and desires and the way we buy things).
So I think the question to ask yourself is not: “Why don’t they want me?”
Instead it’s this: “Where else could my skills create value?”
That question changes everything. And wrests a bit of control into your own hands.
And if you haven’t had a proper break in 6 years and don’t know how to set an Out of Office then this is your sign to ask that question!
